How to start a flower bed in your own backyard

You are starting to notice that your front or backyard is starting to look a little dull, so what can you do to vamp it up a bit? Well the perfect answer is to create a flower bed! Before taking on this project, we recommend that you walk around your property and figure out exactly where you want to place it. Once you have located a suitable location, be sure that all the environmental factors, such as sunlight and water availability,  square off. It is also recommended to plan out the design and maybe even draw up a simple sketch of how you want the bed to be laid out. Having a base design in mind will also help when looking for flowers or other plants to choose from. Once you have completed these steps, start removing the grass in the area that you want to block off for the bed. You can do this by adding pesticides or by digging it out. If your design calls for a big flower bed, it can be fun getting other family members or friends involved in the building process! If you choose to dig the out the existing grass, be sure to use a flat shovel and dig at least 5 inches deep. You can also dig out the perimeter of the bed to better define the overall shape and its boundaries. Once the border is defined, you can start planting your seeds or re-planting flowers you bought at your local nursery. After the planting is done, make sure you are well aware of the requirements of each flower in order for them to fully thrive and contribute to your flower bed.
