Masonry for Beginners

If you are in the mood for a weekend masonry project, but have no clue where to begin, you are in the right place! Today, we will be sharing basic masonry techniques to help you get the ball rolling. First off you need to buy some mason mix (Type S mortar), which will be good for almost everything, including stone, brick, block, and stucco. Next, pour the dry, pre-mixed cement onto a large tray. Add water and start mixing it together until it becomes an even mixture. A good tip for beginners is to practice placing the cement on some old stone or brick before tackling on the full project. Once you have gotten some practice in, you are ready to start! Wet the stone or brick with water first. This is done to wipe off any dust or dirt off its surface. In this situation, we decided are material would be the stone. On a side note, a good tip is to wear rubber when placing cement directly on the stone or rocks you are working with. Once you start placing the stones on top or beside each other, be sure to wipe excess cement before it dries. This can be done with a soaked sponge or washrag. Stone by stone you will slowly create a nice fireplace or a nice feature that will add character to exterior of your home.
